Voice-Powered Healthcare Documentation
The project
Maple Scribe completes the Maple suite ecosystem as an AI-powered voice documentation platform for healthcare providers. As Product Design Lead, I conceptualized and designed a revolutionary approach to patient care documentation that transforms how caregivers capture and manage health records through natural language processing.
Design exploration and prototype development completed in 6 weeks before project transition, including voice AI integration concepts, comprehensive entry type system, and complete UI/UX framework.
Maple Scribe addresses the critical burden of documentation in healthcare settings where caregivers spend up to 40% of their time on paperwork. The platform leverages voice AI (Mei) to enable hands-free documentation of patient care activities, from vital signs to complex incidents. Designed to integrate seamlessly with existing healthcare systems while maintaining HIPAA compliance and accuracy standards required for medical records.
Process
The project required designing for complex healthcare documentation needs while ensuring speed, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
Conducted field studies with caregivers in assisted living facilities, home care, and hospital settings. Identified 11 core documentation types covering ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), vital signs, medications, and incidents. Mapped documentation workflows to understand when caregivers could realistically input data.
Designed conversational AI flows that understand medical terminology, contextual information, and common documentation patterns. Created multi-modal input system allowing voice, touch, or combination inputs based on environment and privacy needs.
Developed modular entry components for different data types: numerical inputs for vitals, categorical selections for assistance levels, text fields for descriptions, and specialized inputs for medications. Each component optimized for both voice and manual entry.
Implemented multi-step verification for critical entries, edit tracking for compliance, and deletion confirmations to prevent accidental data loss. Designed AI review system that flags potential errors or missing information before final submission.
Solution
Maple Scribe delivers intelligent voice documentation.
It reduces administrative burden while improving care quality through comprehensive, accurate record-keeping.
Results
While the project transitioned before full implementation, the design framework established new standards for voice-enabled healthcare documentation.
Voice documentation designs estimated to reduce entry time by 70% compared to traditional charting methods, potentially saving caregivers 2+ hours per shift.
Structured entry system with validation rules designed to improve documentation completeness by 85% and reduce errors through intelligent prompts and verification steps.
Modular component system allows for easy addition of new entry types and customization for different care settings without redesigning core functionality.
Design concepts influenced broader Maple suite development, with voice-first principles adopted across other healthcare products in the portfolio.
